How do you choose a home battery? The short guide
Step 1: look at your evening use
A home battery is well chosen if it can bridge your evening and night. An average Dutch household uses about 4 to 8 kWh between 5pm and 7am. Hence the rule of thumb: small household 5 kWh, average 10 kWh, high use (heat pump, electric car) 10–15 kWh.
Step 2: match it to your solar surplus
The battery must also be able to fill up during the day. With 10 or more panels (± 4 kWp) you comfortably fill a 10 kWh battery on a sunny day. Less roof? Then choose smaller: a battery that rarely fills up pays for itself more slowly.
Step 3: define your goal
Maximising self-consumption (the answer to the end of net metering on 1 January 2027) requires capacity. Optimising against dynamic hourly prices mainly requires a smart energy management system, and works even without solar panels.
Step 4: check your connection
Single-phase or three-phase determines which inverter fits. You can see the number of main fuses in your meter cupboard; if in doubt, we check it free of charge during the installation survey. Modular batteries can be expanded later, so feel free to start one size smaller.
