Which inverter works with which home battery?

Whether a home battery fits your inverter depends almost entirely on which inverter brand you already own. Across 9 manufacturer documents holding 544 released combinations, the gap is stark: Pylontech is released by 57 inverter brands, most other battery brands by exactly one.

This guide is built on our own compatibility dataset: 544 manufacturer-released combinations of home battery and inverter, taken from 9 official documents by BYD, Deye, GoodWe, Huawei, Pylontech and SMA. Every combination carries a source document with a version and a page number. The full searchable list is at which home battery works with which inverter. Short answer: which home battery fits my inverter?

It depends almost entirely on which inverter brand you already own, and the gap between brands is enormous. In our dataset of 544 released combinations, Pylontech is officially released by 57 different inverter brands and BYD by 19. No other battery brand gets beyond 3, and 131 brands are supported by exactly one inverter brand. On the inverter side the picture is the same but inverted: Deye names 132 battery brands in its own list, GoodWe 11 and Huawei exactly one, its own. Anyone buying a Huawei inverter is choosing their battery at the same time, whether or not they were told. Anyone with a Deye or Solis can pick from dozens of brands. Compatibility is therefore not a property of a pair, but of the platform you already own. What settles it is the type number on your inverter's rating plate: variants differing by a single letter are released differently.

What does "it fits" actually mean?

There are three layers and they get confused with one another, which is exactly why people end up with an installation that will not run.

The first layer is electrical. A 48 volt low-voltage battery cannot connect to a high-voltage inverter expecting 200 to 600 volts, and the reverse is equally true. This is the layer people do check, and it is rarely where things go wrong.

The second layer is communication. The inverter and the battery management system have to talk over the same bus using the same protocol, so the inverter knows the state of charge and when to stop. In our dataset 259 of the 544 combinations set an explicit communication requirement, usually CAN but in some cases RS485 at a prescribed baud rate. Two devices that are electrically fine but do not speak each other's protocol will not charge.

The third layer is release. Even when the electrics line up and the bus works, the combination is only supported if the manufacturer has listed it in its own document. That is the layer that decides your warranty, and it is the only layer our dataset makes claims about. Of the 544 combinations, 422 carry one or more additional conditions.

Why this is a buying decision and not an installation detail: a combination that is not on the release list is not covered by the manufacturer. If the battery fails, the first question is which inverter was attached to it. That is also why we fill in the compatibility field on every product page rather than leaving it to the installer.

Locked or open: a gap of nearly two orders of magnitude

The most useful way to look at this market is not brand by brand but open versus closed. Some manufacturers build a platform anyone may connect to; others build a closed system where inverter and battery are sold together and nothing else works. Both are defensible, but they lead to very different situations in five years, when you want to expand or replace something.

Pylontech is by far the most widely supported brand, and that is no accident: it is low-voltage, it uses a protocol many inverter manufacturers adopted, and it therefore appears in almost every release list. BYD follows at a distance on the high-voltage side. Below those two it falls away sharply: 131 of the battery brands in this dataset are released by exactly one inverter brand.

That does not make those brands bad. It means that with such a brand you are tied to one inverter platform, and that a failed inverter in five years leaves you with less choice. If you want to keep that choice open, a low-voltage battery from a widely supported brand is the safest route. What else separates the brands is set out in the brand comparison.

Concretely: these are the cheapest models per kilowatt hour from the most widely released brands in the table above. They are here because they finish at the top of that ranking, not because they sell best.

What can I choose with my inverter brand?

Find your own inverter brand below. "Battery brands" is the number of distinct brands the manufacturer names in its own document, which is the ceiling on your freedom of choice.

The two extremes in this table deserve comment. Deye names 132 battery brands, more than anyone, but attaches its own caveat to 137 of its 145 combinations: the brand is on the list, but the manufacturer asks for confirmation on the specific variant. A long list is therefore not the same as a hard guarantee. GoodWe does the opposite: 11 battery brands across 34 inverter models, with almost no caveats, but within a far narrower field of brands.

If your brand is not listed here, for instance Growatt, SolaX or Sigenergy, check the full list. It holds 68 inverter brands in total, most of which enter the dataset through Pylontech's release list rather than through a document of their own.

How to check your own combination

  1. Read the exact type number from the inverter's rating plate, not from the box or the quote. Manufacturers use variants that differ by a single letter and are released differently.
  2. Look that type number up in the compatibility list. If it is not there, our dataset says nothing about your inverter, which is not the same as "it will not work".
  3. Check the conditions on the row. Usually that is the communication bus, and in 244 cases also a minimum firmware version on the inverter, the battery or both.
  4. Check that the application matches. 125 combinations are limited to on-grid, or to on-grid and off-grid. If you want backup power, this is the field that counts.
  5. If there is a caveat on the row, get written confirmation from the manufacturer or supplier before ordering. In 137 cases the manufacturer asks for exactly that.

Where manufacturers limit their own statements

Not every row in a release list is an equally firm commitment, a distinction comparison sites almost always drop. In our dataset 150 of the 544 combinations carry a caveat from the manufacturer itself.

In 137 of them the manufacturer asks for confirmation on the specific variant before you rely on it. In 13 the manufacturer narrows its own general statement elsewhere in the document, for example by restricting a combination to on-grid where the table heading says nothing about application. We reproduce that narrowing verbatim on the compatibility page rather than dropping it, because dropping it would make the list more optimistic than the manufacturer is.

Can a home battery work without an inverter?

Not as a standalone rack battery, but yes as a plug-and-play model. A 48 volt low-voltage battery stores direct current and your house runs on alternating current, so something always has to sit in between to convert and to decide when to charge and discharge. In a classic setup that is a hybrid inverter, serving both your solar panels and your battery, plus an energy meter that measures what happens at your connection.

In a plug-and-play home battery that inverter is built in and the whole unit goes into an ordinary wall socket. That removes the entire compatibility question on this page, because there is nothing to pair it with. The trade-off is a hard limit: the socket holds discharge power to around 800 watts, which means such a battery will not carry your house through an outage and cannot run heavy appliances on its own. Frequently asked questions

Which home battery fits my inverter?

It depends on your inverter brand. With Deye, Solis or another open low-voltage platform you can choose from dozens of brands. With Huawei only its own LUNA2000 works. Look up your exact type number in the list of 544 released combinations.

Which battery brand works with the most inverters?

Pylontech, by a wide margin. It is released by 57 different inverter brands, against 19 for BYD and 3 or fewer for every other brand in the dataset.

What happens if I install a combination that is not released?

Technically it may work, but the manufacturer does not cover it. When something fails, the first question is which inverter was attached, and an unreleased combination is grounds to refuse warranty. The risk is not that it will not run, but who pays when it breaks.

Does my inverter have to be a hybrid inverter?

For a standalone battery, yes, or you add a separate battery inverter alongside your existing solar inverter. An ordinary string inverter cannot drive a battery. For a plug-and-play model this does not apply, because the inverter is built in.

Does the firmware version really matter?

Yes. In 244 of the 544 combinations the manufacturer sets a firmware requirement on the inverter, the battery or both. A combination released on paper can still fail to communicate on outdated firmware.

Can I use a battery from a different brand than my inverter?

Often yes, but only if that combination appears in a document from one of the two manufacturers. Of the 544 combinations in our dataset the large majority are cross-brand; only on closed platforms such as Huawei is the answer no.
