What does a home battery cost in 2026?
What a home battery costs depends less on capacity than on brand. We put the price per kWh side by side, explain when you can reclaim the 21% VAT and work through a payback calculation with the assumptions stated.
The prices in this guide come straight from our own catalogue and were checked on 18 August 2026. All amounts include VAT, because that is what you actually pay as a private buyer. Short answer: what does a home battery cost?
A standalone home battery in the Netherlands costs roughly € 141 to € 700 per kWh including VAT. For a common 10 kWh battery that means a price difference of about € 1,438 to € 7,000, purely depending on which brand you choose. That gap is wider than the gap between 5 and 15 kWh within the same brand, which makes brand choice the single biggest cost lever you have. If you want a complete working system, meaning battery plus hybrid inverter plus energy meter, that starts here at € 2,022 for 3.5 kWh and runs up to around € 5,562 for 14 kWh. Installation by a certified installer is separate and quoted per address, because the price is driven mostly by the distance to the meter cupboard and the state of your consumer unit.
What does the Dutch market charge per kWh?
What we charge means little unless you know what everyone else charges, so we measure it. The median price of a home battery in the Netherlands is € 328 per kWh including VAT. The middle half of all offers sits between € 249 and € 424 per kWh, the bottom tenth below € 203 and the top tenth above € 540. That is measured across 1,020 offers at 61 Dutch web shops, from 15,968 price observations over 16 days, and it covers the battery alone: no inverter, no installation, no delivery. Per brand it runs from € 171 per kWh at Deye to € 689 at Enphase, a factor of four. How the measurement is built and which offers are excluded is set out with the counts on our price index.
Bigger is not automatically cheaper per kWh, and that is the first thing the measurement corrects. Between the class around 5 kWh and the class around 10 kWh the price per kWh actually rises, from € 341 to € 364. Only above that does it fall, to € 306 around 15 kWh and € 299 around 20 kWh. So if you are buying a bigger battery to push the price per kWh down, you have to go past 12 kWh; below that you are paying for the step from rack to tower.

The biggest money is not in the capacity class but in the shop. For exactly the same model, verified on part number and capacity, the dearest Dutch shop differs from the cheapest by a median of 22%. On the Deye SE-G5.1 Pro-B of 5.12 kWh that reaches 48%: € 733 against € 1,088 for the same box, measured at 3 shops. So compare the model first and the shop second, not the other way round.

Calculate in euro per kWh, not euro per battery
The only way to compare two home batteries fairly is to divide the price by the usable capacity. A battery at € 1,138 sounds cheaper than one at € 2,262, but the first holds 5 kWh and the second 16 kWh, which works out at € 228 against € 141 per kWh. The second is therefore more than a third cheaper per stored kilowatt hour. The same arithmetic shows why small batteries are disproportionately expensive: below 3 kWh you are mostly paying for the enclosure, the battery management system and the certification, not for cells. From around 10 kWh the curve flattens and extra capacity buys you very little further discount per kWh.

What does the battery alone cost?
If you already have a hybrid inverter, for example because your solar panels were installed battery-ready, you only add the battery. That is by far the cheapest route to storage, because the inverter is normally a third to a half of the system price. What matters is that the battery brand works with your inverter: manufacturers publish an approved list, and anything outside it is not covered by the warranty. What does a complete system cost?
A home battery does nothing on its own. To store power from your panels or from the grid you need three things: the battery, a hybrid inverter that converts DC and AC in both directions, and an energy meter or EMS that measures what happens at your connection so the system knows when to charge and discharge. We list those three as a fixed combination on the product page, with the total price, so you do not have to work out for yourself whether the parts talk to each other. The prices below are totals for the complete set including VAT, excluding installation.

What does installation cost?
We do not quote a fixed installation figure, and that is a deliberate choice. The real cost is set by things that differ per address: the cable run from the mounting position to the meter cupboard, whether your consumer unit has space and a spare RCBO, whether chasing and drilling is needed, and whether the engineer finishes in a day. Can you reclaim the VAT on a home battery?
Sometimes, but far less automatically than with solar panels. Solar panels have carried a 0% VAT rate since 2023, and that arrangement does not extend to home batteries: on those you pay the normal 21% VAT. There are two routes to getting that 21% back. The first is the 0% rate, which only applies when the battery is installed at the same time as solar panels on the same home and is supplied as a functional part of that solar installation. The second is a refund through the Dutch tax authority as a VAT-registered trader, which is possible if you feed in and trade power and are therefore treated as an entrepreneur for VAT. In practice that requires a smart battery with an EMS, a dynamic energy contract and invoices in the same name. On a 0% rate for home batteries independently of solar panels, parliament adopted a motion on 9 June 2026 asking the cabinet to investigate whether it is possible; the answer is due on Budget Day, 15 September 2026. There is no bill, so today you pay 21%. The seven conditions set by the tax authority are written out in subsidy and VAT on a home battery.
We are not tax advisers. Whether your situation qualifies depends on your contract, your installation and your tax return. Have it checked by your accountant or with the Belastingdienst before you count on it, and treat a VAT refund as upside in your calculation rather than a given.
Is there a subsidy on home batteries?
No, there is no national subsidy on home batteries. It is the most frequently asked question and the answer has been the same for years: the ISDE scheme covers heat pumps and insulation, not battery storage, and there is no separate national scheme for home batteries. What does exist sits at provincial and municipal level. The province of Flevoland pays 25% of eligible costs, with a floor of € 750 and a ceiling of € 1,250, and a few municipalities run their own scheme or a low-interest sustainability loan rather than a grant. These differ per municipality and change annually, so the only reliable source is your own municipality's energy desk. Do not build a subsidy into your calculation: if your investment only works with a contribution you still have to apply for, the investment probably does not work. What changes on 1 January 2027?
The Dutch net metering scheme, salderen, ends on 1 January 2027. Until then you may offset the power you feed back into the grid against the power you draw, which makes exported solar power worth exactly as much as imported power. From 2027 that ends and you only receive the feed-in payment your energy supplier offers, which is typically a fraction of the price you pay to import. That gap is precisely what a home battery earns: every kilowatt hour you store during the day and use yourself in the evening is one you do not have to buy back at the higher price. The business case for storage does not get better or worse on that date because of policy, it becomes visible. If you have panels today and still net-meter, you will only feel the difference in 2027, but the investment has to be in place by then.
When does a home battery pay for itself?
A payback time is always a calculation built on assumptions, so here are ours, stated explicitly and open to checking. We take a complete 10 kWh system at € 3,561 including VAT, excluding installation. We assume 8 kWh of energy actually shifted per day across 300 days a year, which comes to 2,400 kWh; in winter you will not complete that cycle anywhere near every day. We use an import price of 28 cents per kWh and a feed-in payment of 5 cents per kWh after 2027, so a spread of about 23 cents. That yields roughly € 552 a year, and therefore a payback time of about 6 to 7 years on the hardware.

Include installation and the period lengthens; secure a VAT refund and roughly a fifth comes off. With a dynamic contract you can also trade the price difference between night and evening peak, which raises the yield but also the cycle count, and with it the wear. Whether that trading actually earns anything depends on the round-trip efficiency of your battery, and that calculation is in a dynamic energy contract and a home battery. Most batteries in our catalogue are rated for 6,000 cycles or more, so at 300 cycles a year you stay comfortably inside the expected life.
What is the cheapest home battery?
The cheapest route to storage is a low-voltage rack battery on LFP cells, connected to a hybrid inverter you already own. In our catalogue that starts at € 141 per kWh. These are not household consumer brands but manufacturers who mainly supply installers, using the same LFP cell chemistry and the same certification as the more expensive brands, but without the service desk and the brand name. If that route is not for you, the fair comparison is not "which battery is cheapest" but "which complete system costs least per kWh", and there you start at € 2,022 for the smallest set. What does a 10 kWh home battery cost?

Is a home battery worth it without net metering?
Especially without net metering. While you still net-meter, exported power is worth as much as imported power and storage earns almost nothing. From 1 January 2027 net metering ends and the gap between your import price and your feed-in payment becomes the battery's yield. In our worked example that is about € 552 a year at 10 kWh.
Do you pay 21% or 0% VAT on a home battery?
21% as standard. The 0% rate only applies when the battery is installed at the same time as solar panels on the same home and forms a functional part of that installation. Batteries bought separately do not qualify. A refund through VAT registration is a separate route with its own conditions. A general zero VAT rate on home batteries has been requested through a motion but is not decided: the cabinet answers on 15 September 2026.
Is there a home battery subsidy in 2026?
Not nationally. The ISDE scheme does not cover battery storage and there is no separate national arrangement. The province of Flevoland does run a scheme paying € 750 to € 1,250, and some municipalities offer a low-interest sustainability loan, which is a loan and not a grant. How long does a home battery last?
The LFP batteries in our catalogue generally carry 10 years of factory warranty, 15 years with BYD and a few other brands, and are rated for 6,000 cycles or more.
