What does a home battery cost in the Netherlands?

A home battery costs between 799 and 12,433 euro including VAT here, in capacities from 2 to 30 kWh. We carry 289 battery models. Measured across the Dutch market, the median price is 328 euro per kWh including VAT, from 1,020 offers at 61 shops between 2026-08-16 and 2026-09-01. That is the battery alone, without an inverter and without installation. The same model costs a median 22 percent more at the most expensive Dutch shop than at the cheapest, so comparing on model number pays better than switching brand.

All 333 battery models we sell use LFP cell chemistry, 312 of them established from a document published by the manufacturer itself. Price per kWh falls with size: around 10 kWh the median is 364 euro, around 20 kWh it is 299 euro. Dutch net metering ends on 1 January 2027, which is what makes self-consumption worth more than export from that date.

From that date the feed-in credit for solar power largely disappears. A home battery lets you use more of your own generated power yourself, including in the evening, instead of exporting it at a low rate.

Rule of thumb: roughly 1 kWh of battery capacity per 1 to 1.5 kWp of solar panels, adjusted to your evening consumption. An average household lands on 10 kWh. With a heat pump or an electric car it becomes 15 to 20 kWh, because consumption continues after sunset. Buying more than you empty daily gains nothing: capacity that sits still does not pay for itself, however good the price per kWh looks.

Because there is no settled market price yet. The same model costs a median 22 percent more at the dearest Dutch shop than at the cheapest, so comparing on model number usually pays better than switching brand. The middle half of all Dutch offers sits between 249 and 424 euro per kWh. We measure that daily across 1,020 offers at 61 Dutch online shops and publish the result as an open dataset, method included, under CC BY 4.0. So always compare on the exact model number and convert to euro per kWh including VAT, or you are comparing packaging rather than storage.

All 333 battery models we sell use LFP, lithium iron phosphate. For 312 of them that chemistry is established from a datasheet or manual published by the manufacturer itself; the remaining 21 rest on a supplier document, and each model states which source it is. LFP is thermally more stable than NMC, the chemistry common in electric cars, and it is also the requirement in our own insurance terms. Models whose chemistry turned out to be different are not in the shop. The full check is in our open cell chemistry dataset.

Only if the manufacturer has released that combination. Voltage and communication protocol both have to match, or the battery will not charge even if the connectors fit. An ordinary string inverter cannot drive a battery at all; that needs a hybrid inverter. We maintain an open table of 544 manufacturer-approved battery and inverter combinations, each row naming the document the combination was released in. A combination that is not in there is not approved.

Net metering ends on 1 January 2027. Until then you can offset exported power against what you draw, so the moment you use solar power does not matter. After that only what you consume directly counts at the full rate, and export is worth far less. Shifting daytime generation into the evening is exactly what a home battery does. The scheme is the reason this market is only now getting going in the Netherlands.
